It has not been the most convincing of starts to Real's defence of their league title, with disappointing home draws against Valencia and Levante seeing them fall four points behind rivals Barcelona already, and the return of Ronaldo will be a hugely welcome boost.

Ronaldo looked as deadly as ever as he netted a brace in a comprehensive win over Apoel Nicosia in his side's Champions League opener last week.

His 42 goals in 46 games last season were crucial as Madrid won the La Liga and Champions League double and he will be expected to deliver the goals again to overhaul Barcelona at the top of the league table.
